Kate Moss versus Kate Middleton Social Media Infographic

We might mine a whole lot of data in the LBi Social team, but we’ve also got our finger on the pulse of what’s going on and what people are talking about. Take these two Kates: worlds apart, but in fact, so many similarities.

To commemorate Kate Moss’s wedding on July the 2nd to guitarist of The Kills Jamie Hince, LBi have created a ‘Kate-fographic’ showing how Kate Middleton and Kate Moss fare when they go head-to-head in the online media universe.

Has the Duchess of Cambridge cast a shadow over Kate’s media prowess?

LBi’s ‘Kate-fographic’ maps mentions of the two Kates across every online news source including social networks, blogs and news articles, crunching the results into a timeline that tracks the mentions of the two Kates nicknames given to them by the media.

Ewen Sturgeon, Chief Executive EMEA said: “Anil has been doing an amazing job of leading the agency to new heights in terms of the clients we have won and the work we are now producing. He thoroughly deserves his promotion and I am looking forward to continuing to work with him to further develop LBi in the UK.”

Pillai added: “LBi has been on an exciting journey over the last few years and the momentum with which we are entering 2011 is staggering. It’s great to be taking over as UK Chief Executive at a time when LBi’s creative and strategic offering is reaching critical mass.”

Sturgeon has been LBi’s UK and EMEA Chief Executive since 2007 when the agency was formed following the merger of LBi Icon and Framfab. Prior to that he was Managing Director of Wheel.

Pillai has been UK Managing Director since the creation of LBi three years ago in the UK. Prior to that he was Client Partner at Framfab, and before that Sales Director at Oyster Partners.

Additionally, the reorganisation will see Bigmouthmedia UK Managing Director Phil Gripton take on the newly created role of Managing Director of both LBi UK and Bigmouthmedia UK. LBi and Bigmouthmedia merged last year to provide brands with digital marketing, consulting and technology services in multiple international territories. Gripton joined Bigmouthmedia UK in September 2009. Prior to that he was Director of Partners at Cable & Wireless.

LBi and Macmillan launch the Infi-Knit

LBi and Macmillan Cancer Support have announced the launch of Infi-knit, a web powered knitting machine built to create a woollen petition to highlight the plight of cancer patients living in fuel poverty(www.infi-knit.org.uk).

Macmillan briefed LBi to come up with an innovative way to raise awareness of its campaign to end fuel poverty for cancer patients. Cancer patients have higher fuel bills because they feel the cold more and spend more time at home during treatment and recovery. The campaign is intended ultimately to persuade the government to help vulnerable cancer patients pay their fuel bills.

The Infi-knit has been designed so users can visit the site www.infi-knit.org.uk, and submit what keeps them warm. E.g. “Chocolate keeps me warm”. This personal feeling then selects a unique, coloured pattern, which is knitted into a real life scarf. Web cams, based in LBi’s Brick Lane offices,  records the Infi-knit carrying out its unique stitch, so users can then watch their piece of the knitted petition being created. Users are encouraged to share their warmth on Facebook and Twitter.

Laura Jordan Bambach, Executive Creative Director, LBi,  “Helping Macmillan petition the government in a positive and uplifting way  is exciting for LBi to be part of. By putting a smile on the face of all their supporters taking part creates a warmth of its own. Infi-knit has been built with a lot of love, and hopefully that will show in the campaign’s success over the next few months.”

Christopher Hall, Digital Project Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, “Working closely with LBi we feel we’ve created an innovative and fun way for people to get involved with our petition against fuel poverty. We want people to knit their bit so that people living with cancer can feel warm without the worry.“

LBi and Macmillan would like to offer special thanks to their yarn partner “Yeoman Yarns”, our machine partner “Silver Reed (brought to you by Silver Viscount)” and our software partner “DesignaKnit” for all of their help and support to launch the Infi-knit.

University of Arizona hologram research

The University of Arizona published a paper in November describing the fantastic work they are doing in the field of holography. Previously, holograms could only display static 3D images. Now, thanks to a new rewritable polymer, the Arizona team have managed to create the first moving 3D holograms. The aim is to be able to produce smooth real-time holographic footage, perhaps for use in long-distance communications. At the moment the frame rate is only at two seconds per frame, but since this has come down from four minutes in the last two years we can afford to be cautiously optimistic.

Light Touch

Light Touch is an exciting new product, released by Light Blue Optics earlier this year. It uses holographic laser projection to create bright high-quality moving images on everyday surfaces. That would be impressive enough on its own, but Light Touch doesn’t just project images, it projects multi-touch touchscreens. Infrared sensors allow users to interact with the projections in the same way that they would a touchscreen computer.
